Into Your Hands Friday 4.3 “Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46). One of the best exegesis I heard, on this Word from the cross, was in a teaching by John MacAuthor. He taught, that it translates out, that Jesus didn’t jerk or dropped his head after this statement, as if he had wrestled with death and lost. His breath wasn’t stolen from him. He chose the moment and the hour, when all was finished, to yield his spirit and die. It was all in control. Not Judas, not the Sanhedrin Jews, not Pontius Pilot and his Romans legions, not even the devil himself took his life. He was in control. Jesus gave his life. It was a calculated plot planned before the beginning of time. He spoke through prophet, revealed it in dreams, used types---people and nations. When the fullness of time was come, the bible says, God sent his son born of woman (Galatians 4:4). MacAurthor taught, Jesus laid his head, as on a pillow, fully trusting in his Father and went to sleep. Okay, he died. It’s called death when you can’t see beyond it. He told the disciples on the way to Lazarus tomb, “he’s not dead he’s a sleep.” His body had experience that which falls upon mortal men because of Adam’s sin. The physical function stopped, but the spirit moved on. Jesus was the Word, but knew the Word also. It was all about him. Full faith is proportional to the amount of Word you have in you—resulting not just from reading, studying, meditating, but worship. That revelation has come to be a rock for me. There have been many nights, in my past, where the enemy taunted me, before I laid down. Negative thoughts, fear, and despair came---How do you know he will keep you tonight? I have said many times out of mouth, as I closed my eyes, “Father into thy hands, I commend my spirit.” You see, it’s greater than a keeping for the next part of eternity. It’s a trust that is developed in all of life. Jesus could say that on the cross, because he lived that way. He was always in the Father hands. I have experience sickness and disease where some did not recover. The enemy’s voice again, whispered, “How do you know, he will keep you this time? Solace is always found in faith in the promise of God. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end---Jeremiah 29:11. Psalms 91 is for real. It begins---He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. The peace of God rules, when the Word of God is no longer a study, just a good sermon, or a reading task. It must become life, the food, the water, the inhale---exhale. Every day begins and ends with confidence, “Father into your hands, I commend my spirit, my life, my home, my family, my all.” Then we lay our head confidently in his Word, like a pillow, and go to sleep in His faithfulness.
