Business is my Passion
by Dr. Marci Bryant
Interview with Bea Baylor of Baylor Business Consultant Services
For more than a decade Bea Baylor has been an administrator in the nursing profession, but always at the core of her heart was the tug for entrepreneur endeavors. She loves helping individuals move toward healthy satisfying lives by encouraging and assisting them with their personal and professional goals. One day, she could no longer divide herself between the two careers. While she feels that she’ll always love nursing, she feels it’s time to spread her wings and pursue her own passion, business.

Vof1: Bryant – What is your business interest, exactly what is it that you do?
Baylor – I work with small business owners as well and new coaches to help them grow their businesses in a way that allow them to leverage their business credit. I assist them in obtaining funding for their business and help them gain momentum on leadership via a leadership certification program.
Vof1: Bryant – How long have you been doing this?
Baylor – I have been actively involved for just over 10 years and my greatest joy in ding this is to see business owners who rise to their potential exceed even beyond their own expectations. I think this is just awesome.
Vof1: Bryant – How did you get started on this path?
Baylor – For years I have helped people resolve business problems without even knowing I was offering a valuable service. I suppose you could say that I had a natural bent toward business practicality and then one day I met a friend who offered up a new perspective about how I was involving myself in this arena. It caused me to reevaluate what I was doing and why. I was offering myself and my knowledge for “free” to assist those who came to me with their business concerns and start up issues. At the time I did not know that what I was doing was a marketable commodity. From 1999 to 2009 ( a 10 year span), I started two home health agencies from scratch and today they are receiving revenues in excess of $1,000,000 per year.
Vof1: Bryant – What were some of the obstacles that you faced in doing this project? And, of those challenges which was the one that outweighed the others?
Baylor- One obstacle was the devaluing of service, another was the monitoring of that service that would be delivered and thirdly the lack of support from individuals that you think would be there by their own words. The one most challenging to overcome was the devaluating; you see as a care giver I have been trained to take care of others; thus this just came natural for me. So I just became to “go to” person for everyone regardless of what venue they might be coming from or embarking on. I just gave myself away.
Vof1 Bryant: How did you overcome this?
Baylor: I attended a seminar in Dallas, TX called “DEFY IMPOSSIBLE” When the presenter had you go back to childhood to discover how you began your trek to where you are today, I learned that I assumed the care giving role due to a tragic accident involving my sister and never left that place.
Vof1 Bryant: In your present, how did you divert?
Baylor: First thing I did was give that little girl permission to go away, then, I reassessed myself as a person of value. Then I reassessed all the skills and services that I knew how to perform and put a price on them. By going to business seminars and researching what others were charging for the same services, I came up with a fair marketable price for these services.
Vof1 Bryant: What role as a Christian did your faith play in all of this?
Baylor: First comes to mind, Jeremiah 29:11…knowing that God had a plan and a purpose for me, I began to believe in myself differently and started my journey to healing, which is my ministry…to help others heal! We all come with some kind of background baggage and we just need to learn to let it go.
Vof1 Bryant: How do people find you in order to avail themselves of your services?
Baylor: I have a website: www.beabaylor.com and www.baylorscoachingcommunity.com I am also on facebook and linkedin. And by email: beabaylor@gmail.com
Vof1 Bryant: What advice would you give to someone who wanted to pursue starting a business as a Christian?
Baylor: I am glad you asked me this question. I always say there are negative files, filed away in the brain and one must go to those files and examine them to first identify what they are and are they necessary? The ones that are necessary keep and the other that are not, toss them away or better yet, shred them. Then find a mentor of like mind; don’t go to the world for mentorship; believers need to be in contact with other believers. A mentor can help you find your way and help you discover things about yourself that you may have never noticed or just took for granted. They will also help you to stay focused and moving in the right direction. The right mentor can make all the difference so choose carefully.
