Deliverance Continues
Elwood McHugh's StoryI was raised in a poor Catholic family. I went to public school. In order to make my first Holy Communion and Confirmation, my parents sent me to CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine). When I was old enough, I started working. Eventually, I quit going to school.
I landed a half decent job in a bakery. It was a union gig, paying well. I worked hard for a lot of years. I eventually bought a house, a car, and settling down with my girlfriend. We had our son. Life was good. I started to drink on weekends which soon turned into every day. One day at work, I got injured and needed to have surgery. My doctor prescribed me Percocet. Shortly after that, I was addicted. Soon, I began drinking every day and taking Percocets on top of it. It eventually spiraled into taking Oxycontin and then eventually heroin. I lost everything, my house, my car, and my wife. Even my son had to go live with my in-laws. From 2001 to 2013, my life spiraled out of control. I was the walking dead.
One day, in 2013, my friend Shawn came around my house. He told me about this program called Teen Challenge. I told him, if you can get me into rehab, I would go. I didn’t really think he was going to get me into rehab. I tried to get in rehab myself, before. All they would do is pay for methadone clinics. I’ve been in multiple rehabs. I was also on a methadone program for two years and nothing seemed to work. |

So, I gave my information to Shawn and Bob from Christian Life Prison Recovery Ministry (CLPRM). Sure enough, I was in rehab the following week. It’s funny how God does things sometimes. After rehab, Shawn came and picked me up. He took me to the bus station and put me on a bus to Syracuse, New York. This program saved my life!
The person that I was when I went into the program was not the same person that came out. I literally was a new creation in Christ. I felt, for the first time in my life---peace and happiness. When I came home, I felt like my eyes were opened for the first time. The world was so different to me after the program.
I went through a lot of struggles, working for horrible people. I thought when I came home that God was going to have me working this great job. I thought everything was going to happen so fast. I found out that God works in his time, not ours. But my faith in the Lord was strong and I trusted in him. I knew that everything was going to be fine. I went back to school and got my GED. My driver’s license had been suspended. When I got them back, I bought a car.

I went from one bad job to another. Finally, I ran into someone I knew and had worked with before. He told me to go online and fill out the application for UTZ Quality Foods. I got hired. Three months later UTZ announces they are going independent operated. So I then became a small business owner, making good money with a job that isn’t that hard.
The way God lines up stuff for you is unbelievable. This past October, I applied at UPS for a seasonal driver. When the season was over, I made the cut. (UPS keeps a certain number of drivers after the holiday season is over every year) I don’t know if this is what God has for me, but I’m so grateful.
I’m saving to buy a house. I’m waiting for the Lord to put the right woman in my life to marry. My first wife and I divorced in 2014 but have an amazing relationship. I thank Jesus, as much as I can, for restoration in my life.
I hope my testimony inspires everyone that reads it. Jesus can restore your life too You just gotta have faith.
Thank you, Jesus!
