My God, My God Tuesday 3.31 Matthew 27:46tells us that about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The Moment So, He who on the cross, bearing the sins of the whole world, and has just taking care of His mother, is now crying out to His Father. He quotes Psalms 22:1. Still speaking scripture even in the midst of the horror of the cross, presumed defeat to, and utter abandonment by others. (they said, he saved others, he can’t save himself---Matthew 27:42) He is also fulfilling prophecy Like many psalms, they thought this was David calling out to God as he experienced his trial. It did have some respect to David, but not in fullness. David was a prophet---many psalms were prophetic. Jesus also had a way of taking scripture out of contexts. I jest of course, but to poke at some. Like in Luke 4:18, 19---He pulled the scripture from Isaiah 61 talking about the seventieth year---the Year of Jubilee and applied it to himself. He interpreted a certain year into a time, a moment, and a person. Further investigation reveals that even on the cross, he who was the Word of God incarnate continues to confess the Word through his trial. Jesus who is the mediator between God and man is also humanity’s intercessors. For the redeemed, His blood allows our prayers, but also speaks for us. Sure, in the reality of his own flesh, for he was both man and God, he cries out to the Father as he feels loneliness and despair. He knows that God will deliver, but it still does not stop the pressing of the moment. This perhaps gives more credibility to that truth that He indeed bore in his body our sin, sickness, sorrow, pain, and grief. If any would suggest that he entered some mystical place that toned down the pain, that thought is muted. He bore it all alone. But as our Advocate, he also cries from the place that sin had taken man and brings fallen humanity back to God Almighty. He doesn’t cry out to Buddha, Allah, Confucius or Abraham. He cries out to God—Elohim—the creator, the God of strength. He cries Eloi, Eloi. The religious Jews thought he called for Elijah to help him. Thinking, if this be true, the heaven gone patriarch would come to help. Elijah was believed to precede the Messiah. (He did. It was John the Baptist ministering in Elijah’s anointing) This was the moment for which he had come. It is a moment, we all may experience in some trial of life. In Him, we remember that the secret, if it would be called. He found the answer, as he stood upon the Word that was already prepared for Him, for that moment, from Father. Not David---the prophet, but Abba Yahweh. It is God Almighty who is the Master of turning joy into morning. It is in that same Psalm (22), He quoted on the cross, although the Gospel writer doesn't share, but it is certain, it was also on his mind.----Psalms 3: ---But thou art holy, O thou that inhabits the praises of Israel [people].
