KNOW THYSELF AND THEN YOU WILL KNOW WHY
by Dr. Marci Bryant
Interview with Venus DeSue
At birth she was given the name “Altha”. As Altha she looked for love and acceptance which seemed to allude her as she traveled this road called life. However, through many lessons and trials she has had to learn to love herself. She accomplished this through her knowledge and faith in God, and then she gravitated toward the surname, Venus which means “goddess of love”.
She is self employed, and is earning her living doing what she loves to do. To this end she has developed a business enterprise that she promotes to assist others in finding their own financial freedom. This is her story.

Bryant-Voiceof1: Tell me about yourself, who is Venus?
Venus: Well first of all let me tell you that I am a Christian, a wife, a leader and helper of people who suffer from poor self esteem. You see, I personally have had to deal with the issue of poor self esteem for many years. I had to overcome this in order to get to where I am today. You see, from a young age I was not encouraged to become someone great or even to pursue anything of value.
I was told many times by those closest to me, that I was nothing that I would never amount to anything. Unfortunately, I was not given any positive feedback or reinforce at the time so I believed those untruths. For years I did not walk in my true calling because I felt like there was nothing there for me to accomplish, as the failure was in me.
Bryant-Voiceof1: Obviously you came to a point of letting this poor self image go from your life, what were the pivotal points that brought you there?
Venus: Even though I was told all these negative things about myself, deep down I didn’t believe them, but I didn’t know how to shake loose from the negativity. Eventually, as I grew older, I began hanging around people who were not in my immediate family and friends circle. These people saw something in me and they began to speak positive things into my life.
They would say things like, “Venus, that’s you girl”, or Venus you look good or something like how beautiful or precious I was or how beautiful or precious was the outcome of a particular task that I had fulfilled. This helped me to believe in myself. So I started doing things that I liked to do, like nails, and skin care. I believe in having a healthy body and mind. I believe in free enterprise. I began to dream about what I wanted to do and then I set out to do it.
Bryant-Voiceof 1: What are these enterprises that cause you to smile so brightly and how exactly did you make these discoveries that this is the direction you wanted to take your life?
Venus: I started by reading the greatest self-help book there is … the Bible. I prayed about my situation and my desires. You see I was feeling good being around people who were speaking positive things into my life so I asked God to show me how to move forward from where I was. . I love to read stories of other successful people and how they overcame their obstacles. Particularly Iyanla Vanzant, and I admired Oprah Winfrey, who herself has done a lot to help people. This was a great boost to my spirit.
Then I found Mary Kay. The founder of this company had an amazing story and it was so motivating to me to learn about how she started that company to take care of herself and her family after the major breadwinner was no longer there. She didn’t let anything stop her from moving forward, she believed in herself and her product so she kept learning and moving forward.
Through this company I developed my “can do” attitude. I am also involved with IDLife which is an acronym for Individual Design Life, a health and wellness company. I am also involved with the National Motor Club and Legal Shield which both companies provides protection and security for families and also helps with issues regarding identity theft.
Bryant- Voiceof1: What other obstacles did you have to overcome in order to involve yourself with these companies?
Venus: For a long time I lacked focus. There was so much that I wanted to do and knowing that I couldn’t do it all, I had to narrow this list to those things that were most important to me. And because I did not believe in myself initially, I lacked the confidence I needed to get started. Oh by the way, there was also the problem of support. I did not get the support I needed from my immediate circle so I changed my circle. I started to actively seek out groups and people that were interested in the same things that I was interested in.
They are out there and they are not that hard to find if you look for them. So it wasn’t too long after I started doing this, that my own desires took over and I started my very first business, a nail salon in Rochester, NY, I called it “Nail Creations by Venus”. It felt good to be my own person and also to let those who did not believe I could do it, see it come to pass. My confidence began to grow. I was very good at my profession as a nail technician and loved to take care of others.
Bryant-Voiceof1: How do you now balance your life and your career?
Venus: Well, I do have a key online presence with all of my businesses. I also offer nail services by appointment at the salon which is now located in Downingtown, PA. Because I am self-employed, I control my own schedule.
Bryant-Voiceof1: I am sure readers would like to know, just how successful are you being in business for yourself?
Venus: It is great being your own boss! It has its upside and downside like anything else in life. You see some people work all the time, they just can’t seem to slow down, thinking I guess, that they have to keep their nose to the grinding stone, but as I said before, there has to be some balance. I do manage my time, I use the internet, I make my own hours and I plan around what I want to do with my life. I earn a good living. I don’t have to go out and work part time or full time for any other Company. When I do it is to meet other people. I work “my” business. I am paid well from the time I put in. I have clients in each sector of my business, and I also have other Reps that I train and help them grow their business.
Like many, I have a mortgage, insurance, household and other living expenses and I am very much able to meet those obligations each and every month. I get to travel, meet people and yes help others as well. My goal for 2014 is to help become financially independent and help as many people as I can by telling my story of how I overcame my obstacles with the help of God.
Bryant-Voiceof1: What advice would you give someone who really is an entrepreneur at heart and wants to break out of his or her shell and move in this direction?
Venus: Don’t listen to the negative feedback! That’s number one. Family can sometimes be your biggest naysayers. Surround yourself with people of like minds who have done what you are trying to do. Find out what moves you, not someone else. In other words “What is your Why? And don’t forget to put God first…Family second and Career third. Nothing is really complete without God. I know that everyone does not believe that way but I do and it works for me.
Bryant-Voiceof1: How can people contact you?
Venus: AlthaDeSue@gmail.com by business phone number is 484-36-4220 and my website is www.nmcfs/55722
A final word from Venus: Believe in yourself now, today, don’t go another hour or minute thinking about the negativity that has been spoken in your ears. You can do and become whatever you want, you just have to start believing it. I encourage you to do it now.
