God's Hand On My Wedding
About a month before our wedding, my grandfather insisted he wanted to give us our wedding present due to his heart condition. I guess you could say the large heart he shared all of his life was wearing out. My fiancée Karen and I honored his request, sat with him and chatted, and received our first wedding gift. This was a special time for us.
A party was being prepared in my honor at my mother and father’s house on rehearsal night before our wedding in November. Mom bustled back and forth in the kitchen for two days. She made traditional meatballs, string bean and potato salad, and savory sausage and peppers for approximately forty friends and family. The aroma permeated the house. My grandmother and grandfather lived in their house also.
Karen, the bridal party, and I were at the church rehearsing for our wedding day. My friends and family were at the house waiting for me to come back so we could eat and fellowship together.
After the rehearsal, I stayed behind and prayed everything would go well the next day. Karen and the priest were at the entrance of the church chatting. I found myself praying near the altar for my grandfather who was suffering with a heart condition. The Holy Spirit informed me he would be taking my grandfather and we had a conversation. I stressed, “If you have to take him at least let him see us get married. He’s looking forward to seeing us get married and he’s waited a long time.” Then I said to myself, what am I saying?
I drove home pleased with rehearsal and we had a fantastic party which started when I arrived. My mother and the others waited. My grandfather, who we called Baba, was the center of attention as he loved people. He was uplifted and enjoying the festivities. I was glad to see him so happy.
Wedding day was here and I could hardly wait. Everyone hustled to get dressed and hurry to the church including my grandmother and Baba. My heart leaped in anticipation of this big day. I was so happy God answered my prayer. I glanced back briefly and saw my grandmother and Baba overjoyed. We exchanged vows and everyone was excited. I was relieved everything went well.
After the ceremony my wife and I beamed as we received our guests at the church front door. Everyone gave us their well wishes. My Grandmother and Baba gave us their blessing too. They left the church and walked to the parking lot where Baba grew worse. He experienced a massive heart attack and collapsed to the ground.
I was out in the street directing traffic for the ambulance while my new bride was in the church crying. Baba’s death was kept from the bridal party and me on our special day and we found out the bad news later at the house. God gave me a good wife who postponed our honeymoon.
November 26 was the happiest day of my life and most certainly one of the saddest days of my life. Although this was a shock for me, my family, and friends on my wedding day, I believe this was proof there is a God, not that I ever doubted. God’s hand was on our wedding and my prayer was certainly answered.
